I've been eligible to vote for 50 years. I have only been called to jury duty twice...once during the empanneling we were dismissed because of a plea, the second time was as an alternate for a drunken driving beef.
As a former American History and Civics teacher, I am bummed. But, as I said to my Civics students in the late 1970s early 1980s, I ask that if you learned anything, do your civic duty and vote!
I recall the first time I served jury duty my thought was, "Wait! This is nothing like LA Law? How did these folk get law licenses?" I was also told by my county that at best, I may be called to serve once every 8 years. Instead I was called 4 years in a row.
I only time I’ve ever been called I was doing a job that meant I couldn’t. Haven’t ever done it but it’s such an important part of living in a democracy.
I have never been called for jury duty but have been registered to vote and have voted since 1976. NOW, when I'm 65, and the only person to take care of my 91-year-old mom, they called me about a week ago and want me to show up on 01/02/24. I would love to do it, BUT if anything happens to me in the absolutely awful Chicago neighborhood the District Court is in, my mom is left alone, so I'm not chancing it. They're going to have to catch me after mom goes on to her heavenly reward. But I WILL continue to vote! The notice says to "bring something to read," so I'm guessing a day at court is not like a Law & Order: SVU case. ⚖⚖⚖
I was called for jury duty a while back, it was a felony case. No one in my family has been called since by mother back in 1958! I'm retired, I wanted to go, I went early morning, filled out a bizillion page questionnaire and was told I'd be notified by the afternoon. I got an email releasing me before I could get to the parking garage. Ooops, I'm former law enforcement (44 years ago)... I know they won't call be again, duh. I really wanted the experience, honesty, fairness and civic responsibility was what I pledged. So much for that idea.
I agree. I've had to report for jury duty dozens of times and served twice. It is an experience everyone should experience at least once. Of course, the best part of turning 70 this year was never having to serve again!
Even though I'm an attorney for the gub'mint (27 years as a criminal prosecutor, 2+ years as a civil prosecutor), I have sat on 2 juries and acted as foreperson both times. Everyone who is qualified to do so should participate in jury service - it's the least we can do to ensure that our constitutional rights continue to matter.
Excellent! I've been on five different jury trials, and I think we did a good job---came to the correct verdicts---in all five. Yes, it is a pain to take time off work, but it is a great experience. I honestly don't understand people who will do anything NOT to serve. Probably the same people who can't be bothered to do that other important civic duty, vote.
Thank you … I got called for case but neither side wanted me because my late husband was chief administrative judge in palm beach county it must have been interesting case because the questions
I have served on a jury more than once , and happy to do it !

As someone who was selected for a murder trial jury, jury duty is something everyone should experience
