Every word you have written is true—horrifyingly true, unbelievably true. It’s a shitstorm! I studied Tammany Hall in school; I knew, growing up in Kansas City, about the Pendergast machine and corruption in Kansas City—the reason why Brush Creek has been lined with cement; I somewhere learned about Huey Long in Louisiana. But—until now—the implicit bias toward the monied class which reflects the reality that our “founding fathers” were the landed gentry, was always there, but gradually inching toward more equality….Of course, few knew about the Koch brothers’ long-sighted plan to control state and National politics through gerrymandering at the State level, creating the Federalist Society, to select justices favorable to corporate interests….and ultimately, to end any check on corporations through regulations. It actually first came into public view during Newt Gingrich’s tenure as House majority leader, but even Democratic representatives didn’t understand what was happening, for many years after his playbook went into effect.

“Dark Money” by Jane Mayer outlined the whole plan in detail; it was on the New York Times bestseller list; it’s hard to believe so many of our fellow Americans are ignorant about what has been going on!

Those opposed to abortion have largely seen their wishes realized, but most MAGA supporters fail to grasp that there is nothing in Donald Trump’s world view which will in any way benefit them or their families. I was fascinated to see a televised interview with a woman who wailed, re: Trump, “but he promised to bring back the logging!” Clear cut forests aren’t coming back, regardless of anyone’s promises!

Those Republicans in power are only there because they value power for its own sake; for the Senators and Congressional Representatives who

see it as worth having and using for themselves and their cronies. They are surprisingly out-of-touch with reality; I have trouble believing anyone doesn’t know about climate change, and doesn’t understand we’re now on the steep edge of a logo-rhythmic curve toward oblivion.

I’m a senior citizen; lucky to have seen the wonders of our planet when it was more stable. I truly would like future generations to have the same opportunity; it seems less and less probable. But I won’t give up trying! Freedom, and the world in balance with nature are two aspirations worth fighting for to the end. I hope—I really hope—it doesn’t come to that. Keep the faith!

Happy Birthday Oregon 💙🦅💛

A Poem For #LoriCoyote,

Rep. Lori Chavez-Deremer, based on the true story of a constituent (ME) asking “Ukraine or Putin?” at the representative’s Open House (Oregon District 5).

I am an old woman

I did not wear purple

I wore red, white, and blue.

I traveled back home to

the place of my own birth

as pilgrims often do.

I came not to fight you,

not to parse or to sally,

I asked, you lied, didn’t answer.

please remember the dead

rest atop of the hill —

above your happy valley

by sward, 2/14/3024

— Here’s the thing that makes me angrier than I ever imagined politics would ever do — Lori Chavez-Deremer was the mayor of Happy Valley, Oregon, an affluent community gerrymandered into my district. Happy Valley sits at the base of Mt. Scott, the location of Willamette National Cemetery. As of 2021, there had been 188,000 interments there, including my Eisenhower Republican dad and my beautiful beloved sister. This is VERY PERSONAL.

I'm a 21 year-old German in the west of the country. Our military is derelict.

US Partisanship is putting my freedom on the line.

For a while I thought they were just a bunch of star-fuckers. Morons like Ron Johnson and Michael Flynn went to Moscow and were dazzled by the stupid, excess, over-the-top wealth of the oligarchs and Putin. Now I think that yeah, that’s true, but they’re also autocracy-fuckers. They think that that system is the way they get to lord it over everyone else.

I’m also a child of the cold war. I grew up on AF bases - my dad was a pilot. We regularly went “on alert” in the 60’s when things flared up with the Soviets. Nuclear war wasn’t out of the question.

Many of these republicans are older than I am and lived through the same thing. The fact they’re siding with Putin is beyond horrific.

They aren’t just unserious people, they’re bad people.

We (and the world) would have been better off had we exported democracy before capitalism to Russia after the collapse of the CCCP. We may not have liked what we got if Russians truly had a voice in determining their own future (perhaps a Vietnam style capitalism meshed w social support).

Instead, we choice market access and wealth generation for a few (American and Russian) which led to economic stratification and gross income inequality. The people could handle being poor and respected internationally. Being poor and a laughingstock enabled the rise of Putin.

Trump is a symptom of a failed government. Reagan and Thatcher tore it all down. Republicans were warned for decades that their policies would lead to disaster. And the Democrats were complicit in this destruction.
