When German Admiral Wilhelm Canaris saw Adolph Hitler’s rise to power, he did what any aristocratic, nationalist, anti-communist German military man would do; he got on board.
I’m not so sure about Mike Pence still. He said he wasn’t ENDORSING Trump, but when a reporter asked him if he was going to VOTE for him, he deflected and refused to answer the question. He said he was going to vote Republican. There’s no other Republican candidate besides Trump, so Pence won’t endorse him, but he’s certainly still voting for him. Evil is evil, whether you speak it out loud or vote for it on the ballot.
Powerful story entirely appropriate at this time. Personally, I never forgave him for the sanctimonious mess he made of gay rights Indiana’s Governor. That was enough to foreshadow merely a hint of the poor judgement and groveling he did for “the previous
guy”. But a hint of clarity and decency even at this late date is a relief! But only that. Your powerful history lesson does indeed speak to “real” courage. Thank you!
I think it was to bring in the Religious Right, who at that time weren't sure of Trump's "Christian" values - Pence was Trump's "reference" that he was a good Christian.
Pence has not as another comment remarked, “Grown a pair”. He’s afraid and a coward who has slipped into irrelevancy..That actually has beliefs rolling around in his head of one day being a presidential candidate on a Republican ticket..However, on the matter of that Trump rally in Ohio..
After his Ohio threats to the nation, there are strategies that demand to be deployed to face this clear and present danger to the country..His threats are not political speech, and they should have crossed the line of his condition of release, it needs to be contained..He is an unhindered person threatening the country..It must be stopped immediately!
I think it was American historian John Meacham who said that the current political rhetoric is echoing the decade prior to the Civil War.
I fear that he may be right. What damage Trump and his disciples have done (and continue to do) to America. And all for his own insatiable narcissistic needs.
Even Trump's demise won't stop Trumpism - if he's struck by a bolt of lightning his trigger-finger followers will claim it was a CIA plot. (or a Jewish space laser)
And he has the audacity to compare himself with Lincoln.
Lincoln fought to keep the country together; Bone-spurs fights to tear the country apart.
But the only way to stop him (and his cult-followers) is a massive Blue Wave at the ballot box. Nothing else will stop Trumpism.
I have great respect for John Meacham, and as you remark Abraham, he may very well be right..However, I am a believer in the majority of these people are lemmings, not critical thinking people..If they were to loose Trump, they would be lost..
Now, having said this, there are the R. Stones, S. Bannons et.al. of this equation that need to be properly dealt with..To date this has not happened..
Also, Fascist Christian Nationalism, which as you may know a diametrically opposed ideology from Christianity is a very big problem in the country..This is where the Heritage Foundation, CNP, America First and more orgs come into play..this is worrisome for me..Just the idea of Mike Johnson who is a Fascist C.N. as Speaker of the House is very disturbing..A “massive Blue Wave” as you say will be pivotal in combating this evil..But there will be more that must be done..
the immediate Job One is to insure that Trump is prevented (at the ballot box) from re-gaining the White House and MAGA Republicans lose political power in House & Senate and hopefully in State govts.
Step Two will be the unfolding of Trump's legal trials (and his co-conspirators).
That will still leave a broad swath of angry well-armed MAGAs, but if they become violent, I'm sure there will be an appropriate govt response.
There will of course still be a dangerous anti-Dem constituency, but American politics has always had a fascist undercurrent.
The main thing is to STOP TRUMPISM from any more political power - it doesn't destroy Trumpism, but it keeps their hands off the wheels of govt.
What stood out to me was the assertion by Pence that he was "proud of what his administration and what they accomplished "; before saying that he would not endorse dump.
At the time when Hitler was elected in 1932 (under the banner Make Germany Great Again) he hadn't yet killed millions or started a world war. But the election of Hitler and his Nazis led to that.
I don't think it's asinine to forecast what might happen if Trump and MAGA take over America. Trump, like Hitler, has already told us what he'll do.
Trump said he'd kill 6 million Jews? Who cares when Hitler was elected. It's what he did that counts. Any comparison between Hitler and what he did and what Trump did is completely asinine. Anyone who makes such a comparison, is a moronic polemic. We have a very good idea what Trump will do based on his first term. You should take your wonderful ability to foretell the future to Vegas and see how that works out for you.
He told us what he will do: abandon Ukraine, pull out of NATO, set up camps for the vermin, mass deportations, ... for starters.
Daniel, how can you be so naive, so gullible to this narcissistic conman - can't you see he's only in it for himself, for his insatiable ego, and this time to keep himself out of jail - he doesn't give a shit about you or any one else but himself.
He's saying what you and the MAGAs want to hear, but he doesn't believe any of it - never did until he decided to run as a Republican.
And you all fell for it.
Trump's been a life-long Democrat, pro-choice, gave millions to the Clintons. Talk about RINOs!
The joke is on all the people who fell for his America First con - it's Trump First. Period.
And you should care about history: try Ruth Ben-Ghiat's "Strongmen" - you'll see Trump right in there with Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Kim Putin (Trump's idols) and all the other narcissistic psychopaths who fooled their own people into thinking they were in it for their countrymen - they were all in it for themselves.
Here's a short review of the book: hope it opens your eyes to Trump's Big Con.
I had no idea that Bonhoeffer died that way. Horrifying and heart-breaking -- for him, and for all of his brave, brave, brave comrades. They are surely in Heaven.
Her. Apologies.

There’s another courageous gentleman, Georg Elser. A fascinating story. Missed by minutes, Hitler and escape from Germany
Courage is a virtue when in service of a good cause, but some have been courageous in service of bad causes.
Interesting post....the British read his personal mail and were puzzled by some of his words.
It turned out he was extremely devoted to his dogs, so he was always writing home when on the road and asking about their medical condition and diet.
I just copied this link and sent it to Rep. Lori Chavez-Deremer. She has chosen poorly.
I still want to know why Manafort worked it so that tRUmp picked Pence for VP. Has to work back to Putin some way.
I think it was to bring in the Religious Right, who at that time weren't sure of Trump's "Christian" values - Pence was Trump's "reference" that he was a good Christian.
Yeah, right.

I don’t laud the man whatsoever, I’m simply thankful he certified the election.
Thanks Rick. There were many hero’s behind the scenes in Hitlers Germany. I did not know about this general.
Laura, you might be interested in another example of COURAGE in the face of tyranny.

as Trump would say, they're the Greatest Hypocrites in the History of the Country,
Trump killed 6 million Jews and started a world war? You're comparison is asinine.
Jesus. The article contrasts Pence's "courage" with true courage under a truly totalitarian system. Note the word "contrasts". Go look it up.
The "article" makes a ridiculous comparison between Hitler and Trump. "Go look it up."
Point out where. I'll wait.

Yes, no doubt a second term of Drumpf will bring "peace in our time."

So narcissistic he gave up his salary for four years and donated it to worthy causes? I don't believe anything you say. I'm out.
Translated: "I can't read that much logic, I'm off to Breitbart to get a verbal handjob."
Speaking of heroes, here is a work-in-progress on WHITE ROSE, a handful of students who showed true Courage, and paid the price.
In our Age of Cowardice, they are a shining star.

I would offer that, like kushner, pence bears some responsibility for the malignant, political covid response. He was covid minister.
