Your comment on the initial handshake at Tuesday’s debate, like everyone else’s, didn’t match my perception. Most people noted Harris invaded Trump’s space as he stood behind his podium. This may be so, but it starts in the wrong place. The candidates entered from opposite sides, downstage of the podia, and Harris walked straight ahead (as if they would meet in the middle, shake hands, and then go up to their respective podia—a classic start to a debate or a sports match). But Trump saw her coming and avoided her, turning left to head upstage and behind his podium, which led her to pivot and meet him upstage of his podium for the handshake. In my view, from the very first moment Trump was on the run—he didn’t even make it to the middle of the apron to meet his opponent.

You are quite correct & some others on msnbc commented on that exact scenario. They, like you, said he was definitely using avoidance tactics to not have to look her in the eye & shake her hand. 😂 Also he used a slow shuffling walk as a delay tactic, hoping that she would get to her podium before he did.

That she saw what he was doing & strode up to him, looked him in the eye, shook his hand, pronounced her name, & said “Let’s have a good debate” was a great power move.

Thanks very much.

Did I imagine it, or did your dog actually whine every time you brought up the Haitians eating dogs story?😂

I love this analysis. The ad is brilliant. It will likely make him shit himself all weekend.

The mask falls eventually and then the people who were fooled start to see just exactly who their hero really is.

Right on the money!! Too bloody lazy to do the prep. His bullshit is worn out. Same old schtick from 2016. In more ways than one he’s yesterday man. Watch out. He is increasingly backed into a corner and who knows what he’ll do. Orban is his hero? Are you kidding? VOTE!

His niece, Mary Trump, told O’Donnell that VP Harris inflicted a severe Narcissistic Injury on Donald from which he will never recover; & because of that wound he will become more & more dangerous.

I believe her, she grew up in that family.

Hi Rick! I love what you do. Big fan since I learned about Lincoln from Joe Trippi's podcast!

Do you think it's time to make Trump paranoid about J.D. Vance? What if there was a leak of a J.D. Vance commercial where he's running for president and saying "now that Trump has stepped down...". It doesn't matter where the video came from, or if it is real. Trump would go nuts!

Expand full comment

As much as I love that idea of messing with DonOLD’s mind, I absolutely don’t want to give him any ideas about dumping JD from the ticket. His drag on the ticket is glorious. He hates women & we hate him right back. 😉

Trump did not pick Vance, Vance was forced on him by the billionaires. And the billionaires preferred Vance to take over but now...well, even they can see that we see that Vance is just a creep.

Put that in the ad!

All facts. Loomer as debate prep was an epic fail.

I just watched a podcast (Adam Mockler) showing “high”lights of tfg’s AZ speech where he recounts an imaginary conversation where the moderator was yelling at him about a fact check and he asked him why he was yelling. They then showed a clip of what had really happened, which was the moderator speaking in a calm voice and tfg yelling. Even stranger, tfg criticized the moderator’s hair!

Well now, that’s rich 🤣 David Muir is an extremely good-looking man with thick gorgeous hair. ❤️

True. Besides that, what on earth does his hair have to do with anything related to the debate.

I seriously do not understand how you are a better journalist and reporter than anyone out there, and you’re not even trying to be. (You would probably call yourself a defender of democracy, or something like that.)

Nonetheless, this piece, and the earlier piece right after the debate, had more depth, historical background, and keen insight than anything that I have seen anywhere else.

Bravo. Bravo. Bravo.

Allan Lichtman has predicted the next president correctly since Reagan in 1982 -

Well, the ONE time he was wrong: Gore/Bush when the Supreme Court intervened and declared Bush the winner. (Rotten republicans).

So, ignore the polls and the pundits. She's in. Link to his video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXGH9kVl2KU

I'd rather ignore Alan Lichtman too and do the work. We haven't won yet.

Thank you Rick for reminding everyone that as much as Trump lost, VP Harris won.

I see people comparing it to Trump/Clinton or Obama’s second debate with Romney and I’m like no - not even close. She didn’t just mop the floor with Trump, she made the debate fun to watch for normies. Her facial expressions - let her act as an audience stand in, it was all the faces we pulled over the years. I have never enjoyed watching a debate before. Kamala was outstanding.

You know how good she is by all the Qanon bugged earrings crap out there. This doesn’t happen when Uber Führer wins.

The other lady of the night, was one I thought my fascination with was a niche interest. The knot of self loathing and daddy issues that is Laura Loomer really scored a home run with ‘eats the dogs’.

She is that perfect blend of desperation and cosmetic surgery to appeal to Trump, he knows she is so abject, so utterly broken she will never betray him, no matter what. She’s his kind of people. Bunker people.

Now her and MTG are fighting because Loomer said something so schoolyard racist even MTG baulked. Or - more likely, because Trump has found a replacement with even less self-respect and is parading her accordingly.

If the debate moved the polls enough, he might change his mind. I am surprised he said this before knowing what happens in the polls.

He got whupped and he didn't like it.

Unless I missed it, I don't think Trump personally insulted Kamala Harris the way he did Hillary Clinton by calling her 'a nasty woman' at one of their debates. What do we make of that?

Expand full comment

Oh he belittled her plenty. Said her economic plan was like "see spot run." Said that she didn't "negotiate" with Putin days before the Ukraine invasion to stop it. Said that she has no ideas of her own but is only copying Biden. And then doubling down on her "turning black" even while insisting that "who she is" is meaningless to him. He was relentlessly derogatory.

But unlike him, Kamala took _none_ of that bait and kept every answer about what's best for the American people. She didn't breathe one word of being affronted or personal grievance.

What does the Harris campaign do now to continue to own the narrative and win another week? It seems to me the Republicans and Trump are going to be spluttering about how Trump really won, the moderators were unfair, etc. It's an opportunity to own the narrative for one more week at least.

How does a campaign run off of the momentum of winning a debate? Maybe a townhall? I think she should outline more of her plans to reduce cost of living, for example the home-buyer benefit to encourage construction.

As much as we all enjoy reliving and reveling in the moments when Trump walked into a buzz saw like the clueless chucklehead we know he is, I'd like to hear how campaigns follow up a clear win to own the narrative for another week.

First major post-debate poll, Reuters / Ipsos: Harris 47, Trump 42.

Just outside the margin of error ;)

I've read that Harris is 'in talks' with the Black journalists group that hosted T to have a virtual event. I wish she'd do it in-person, which I think would get a lot of coverage considering the mess T made in his appearance. Good way to amplify the coverage.

That is fine but it seems to me she needs to aim for a bigger audience. I think the attention Trump got was enhanced because he went there and behaved like a total asshole.

Just so and the contrast between the a hole and the stateswoman would be generously covered.
