In this second term, Trump’s lawlessness is the point, a Rosetta Stone for understanding their actions thus far and those to come.
The flood of dodgy and legally dubious executive orders1, the release of the January 6 terrorists, the abandonment of federal ethics and lobbying rules for appointees, and the overt merger between Trump’s financial interests and governance (insofar as he can be said to govern) paint a picture of criminality and corruption unrivaled in modern history.
The rule of law has become just another talking point for MAGA activists and their obedient conservative cheerleaders. With every unconstitutional order, illegal action, and unbounded exercise of executive power, the supposed “rule of law” crowd seems smaller than ever.
